The three faces in the foreground of this painting represent one woman but appear different to reflect our fluid perception of ourselves and our abilities in dreams. The background is light and rose-colored in reference to the experience of seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, something that holds connotations of naivety and idealistic optimism. Here, the rose-colored background is juxtaposed with the expressions on the faces which are simultaneously peaceful and serious. The fourth face is loosely defined and emerges from the background (middle left side) to represent the superstition and mythology that have historically been used to explain the curious contents of our dreams.
